Harvard Business Review Style Guide
Editing Documents Coursework

Summary: I created this style guide as a part of my Editing Documents course. For this project, I was tasked with using one article that Harvard Business Review had published to create a style guide based on the style choices of that specific article. I started this assignment by carefully reading the sample article multiple times and highlighting essential style choices, details, and nuances that would be helpful to be included in a style guide. From there, I was given the opportunity to collaborate with peers in the class to compare our findings. After I worked with a team of three other editors in the class, I individually formatted and wrote the style guide. The purpose of this assignment was to become even more familiarized and comfortable working with style guides through the creation of my own. I chose to include this project in my ePortfolio to showcase my understanding of how to effectively use and create a style guide for a company.

Reflection: This assignment helped me to build my confidence in using style guides and gave me the necessary skills and experience to be able to create a style guide on my own. I found it incredibly beneficial to have this hands-on experience to understand the nuances of what makes an effective style guide. In my previous courses, I had only used or viewed examples of style guides; through creating my own style guide, I was able to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of why style guides are so important. In addition, this assignment helped me to grow my collaboration skills as an editor. In my practical and academic editorial positions, I know how essential working on an editorial team is. By having the opportunity to collaborate with others on this assignment, I was able to not only better my finished project, but also learn how to mediate disagreements between what should be included in a style guide, and I had the opportunity to listen to new perspectives from others in the course.

Copyediting and Publishing Internship Report
Short Vine Literary Journal Internship

Summary: This document served as my reflection and final report for my Copyediting and Publishing internship during Fall 2022 with Short Vine Literary Journal. In my internship, I took on several roles for the journal: social media manager, marketer, assistant managing editor, and assistant designer and publisher. This report details a summary of why I chose this internship, what I learned, a description of my responsibilities, and supplemental figures and materials created during the internship. I chose to include this assignment in my ePortfolio because I wanted to showcase what I learned in this internship as well as highlight my proficiency in summarization, reflection, and critical thinking about my experiences.

Reflection: This report provided a valuable opportunity for me to reflect back on what I have learned throughout my semester interning for Short Vine. I know that I will be able to look back at this report and see a comprehensive log of all that I was able to accomplish during this semester as well as how I have grown my skills in the publishing industry. The process of creating this document was somewhat intimidating at first as I was unsure of how to write a semester's worth of experiences into a single report, but, through breaking up the report with headings and subheadings, I was able to create an organized document that fully detailed my experiences in a concise and readable format. I am proud of both the impact I was able to make interning with Short Vine and the report that showcased the experience.

Developmental Editing Letter
Editing Documents Coursework

Summary: I created this letter for one of my assignments in my Editing Documents course. For this assignment, I used a listicle blog post to write a developmental editing report to the blog post's author to transform the content into a short book. The book would be a part of a larger series from our hypothetical publisher called "Two Weeks to Transform," so a large part of the assignment was to help the author adapt 25 tips into a two-week plan that would be beneficial to a hypothetical target audience. For this assignment, we were also encouraged to work in groups. My group decided to focus our assignment on a blog post about managing your time effectively as a student. I chose to include this document in my ePortfolio because it showcases my ability to work effectively with an editorial team as well as my understanding of developmental editing and author communication.

Reflection: Creating this developmental editing report helped me to grow as an editor and as a communicator. Previously, I had only had hands-on experience with copyediting, so I was excited to be able to break into a new aspect of editing that I have been particularly interested in. I found the project of helping an author make their content the best it can possibly be for their audience to be a gratifying experience. I also enjoyed working with other editors in the course. In addition, because we were working in a group, this assignment also gave me the opportunity to edit, copyedit, and proofread my group members' work, which gave me even more experience in all levels of editing.
